Vulnerable America, Another Mass Shooting: Fort Lauderdale
February 6, 2017
January 6,2017, just before 1pm, reports come in that there has been a shooting inside the Fort Lauderdale airport in Florida. This attack last Friday left 5 people dead and eight injured. This comes at a time when the United States is very vulnerable with Donald Trump replacing Obama as president, Russia is hacking, and affairs with other countries are unsteady. This is the first big shooting of the year and is a very depressing one. What the police have found out is the killer is Esteban Santiago. Santiago is a 26-year-old National Guard veteran recently living in Anchorage Alaska. In 2010-2011 Santiago was deployed to Iraq and when he returned he was not the same. He reported to the FBI he thought the government was controlling his mind and was making him watch Isis videos. The FBI did a mental health check on Santiago and took away his gun but the mental check deemed nothing was wrong and his gun was returned (http://www.cnn.com).On Friday Santiago took a flight from Anchorage to Minneapolis then to Fort Lauderdale with the gun checked in his baggage. In Fort Lauderdale he received his luggage, went to the bathroom, loaded the gun and went out into the terminal and shot the 5 people and injured the others. He was arrested soon after (http://www.vox.com).This attack reminds us that we need to make sure we take care of other citizens and keep them under surveillance for more than a few days. “We had this situation where he slipped through the cracks,” CNN national security and law enforcement analyst Tom Fuentes said (http://www.cnn.com).This needs to be fixed and does not need to happen again.
