America the Beautiful was sung at the Superbowl this year by Jasmine Cephas Jones, Renee Elise Goldsberry, and Phillipa Soo. These three girls were the Schuyler Sisters in Hamilton’s original Broadway cast. They added their own twist to the lyrics this year, to promote equality and show their bond with each other. When the lyrics would usually go “God shed his grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood, From sea to shining sea!” They added in a “And sisterhood” after the word brotherhood. They have been known to be strong advocates and believers in equal rights for all groups.

The National Anthem this year was sung by Country artist Luke Bryan. This was an interesting choice as Bryan is only the third male ever to sing the National Anthem for the Superbowl and the sixth country artist to sing the song. The last time he sung the National Anthem for a sports game was the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in 2012. Here he was spotted reading lyrics that he had written on his hand, an act that offended many. Luckily at the Superbowl he redeemed himself.
