Sleep deprivation in the United States is defined as a condition of suffering from a lack of sleep.
This is becoming an epidemic for more than one reason. This lack of sleep in our adolescents is a
cause to the rise of things such as mental disorders, suicides, and child obesity. Yet, students are
knowledgeable of all of these things.  Public schools, especially those that sustain young
adolescents, should be required to teach students the importance of sleep and how sleep
deprivation affects their minds and bodies.
“In 2011, two-thirds of adolescents reported insufficient sleep, as did one-third of young adults.”
(healthypeople.gov) The constant use of technology such as cellular devices, tablets, laptops,
television, and gaming consoles is a leading cause of sleepless nights for teenagers. (Dr.
Mercola) According to Rally Health, kids spend an average of 6.5 to 8 hours per day looking at
screens. The blue light from their devices stops melatonin, a hormone released to help the body
enter the first stage of sleep, from being released into the brain.
Another significant impact of the sleep deprivation in teenagers is the amount of school work
they are burdened with to keep up with on a daily basis. Most importantly, students have not
been educated on the importance of sleep. If students knew what they were doing to themselves,
they would make sleep more of a priority.
