Love is a confusing concept that was created by mankind to express how they feel towards people. Love can be confused in many eyes though. Some people decide to show love by kissing, hugging, showing compassion, and other people show love in the total opposite way– what they may call “tough love.” A question that has arose is “What is love, and why does it captivate us?”

The definition of love is a “strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). Now, while those definitions don’t apply to everyone, love has different meanings. For example, love can mean trust, commitment, and/or dependability. For some, it’s something that is big, scary, and intimidating. But for others, it can be peaceful, wonderful, and powerful.

Love can also be painful. One of the prime examples of this is the classic “Romeo and Juliet,” one of the most renowned love stories. In the story, there are two people from different families that hate each other. Romeo and Juliet who were the two people fall in love but the family disagrees. At the end Romeo and Juliet die for each other and it took their deaths for the families to come together and love each other. While in some cases that doesn’t happen, it could.

People compare love to science, saying it’s a powerful neurological condition like hunger or thirst, only more permanent. Others will go off and say love is a commitment and drives the best stories. Remember those are all opinions from other people, so now a question that you should be asking yourself. What does love mean to you.
