Nicolas Cage will play the Man of Steel in the new "Teen Titans Go!' movie.

Our world seems to the place of celebrities. To most people, it’s no major surprise. However, when news of a celebrity playing a role in a movie or making a guest appearance in a TV show comes around, it can go both ways, even though celebrity appearances are nothing new. One way is that they are so surprised and excited that their favorite actor or musician is playing a part or at least making a cameo, even if a film is known to be bad. The other way is that some people don’t find it shocking that a certain celebrity is in a movie or TV show considering how many movies a certain actor or musician has been in. For example, Johnny Depp, a very famous actor, has appeared in 55 movies throughout his career. Superhero favorite and Marvel writer Stan Lee has made cameo appearances in recent Marvel films such as Thor: Ragnarok. On the topic of superhero movies, Teen Titans Go! is going to give superhero fans the biggest surprise of their lives.

Brian Truitt of USA Today has scooped the superhero news with the latest update from executive producer, Sam Register, on the upcoming animated feature, Teen Titans Go! To The Movies. More and more people in Hollywood are joining the Teen Titans on their Tinsel Town adventure, 3 of them voicing the most iconic superheroes in DC history. Rapper Lil Yachty will take on the role of Green Lantern in the brightest day and blackest night. Singer/songwriter Halsey will hold on to the Lasso of Truth when she voices Wonder Woman. “Every superhero in the DC Universe has an impact on the fans,” Register said in an interview with USA Today “so we felt a great responsibility to find a voice for each character that would not only suit the role, but the playful tone of the Titans, and we’re thrilled with our cameo cast.” But that’s not all that Register had to offer. Academy award-winning actor, Nicolas Cage, finally got his chance to play Superman after 20 years. There is a huge reason why Nicolas hasn’t gotten the chance to play the Man of Steel for quite a while.

Back in the mid-90’s, Warner Bros. wanted to reboot the Superman film franchise. Instead of building on the foundation built by Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve, they wanted to turn the franchise into something else according to The Verge. That project was called Superman Lives. Popular comic enthusiast and comedian Kevin Smith wrote the script based on the Death of Superman comic series. Later, Cage was hired to play the Man of Steel and Tim Burton was hired to direct the film. Just 3 weeks into pre-production, everything went wrong with giant spiders, polar bears, and shiny nylon costumes. Not to mention the fight that broke off between Kevin Smith and Tim Burton over the screenplay that he wrote. Even frequent rewrites from Wesley Strick and Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy hasn’t helped much with the project either. The film was shelved entirely before the film was in production because of all that chaos in its pre-production phase. Those details and more are covered in the documentary directed by Space Ghost Coast to Coast alum Jon Schepp, The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? The documentary is available for viewing on Amazon Video or can be purchased on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Nicolas Cage has been a big Superman fan since the very beginning. In fact, he named his son Kal-El after the comic book character. It made sense that he would play Superman in the new Teen Titans Go! movie. After 20 years of his first shot at playing the Man of Steel in the canceled Superman Lives project, this is his second opportunity to bring Superman to life, but in animated form. Through the chaos of pre-production involving polar bears, giant spiders, shiny costumes, and a big disagreement between Kevin Smith and Tim Burton over how the film should play out, Superman will at least live on in the DC realm. If anyone is interested in seeing the Man of Steel in action with the Titans, they can catch Teen Titans Go! To The Movies in theaters this summer on July 27, 2018.
