As many residents of Colorado Springs know,  Pikes Peak is one of the main sources of tourism. On top of Pikes Peak, the Pikes Peak Summit House has been a familiar sight to see and visit for over the last 50 years. However, next time locals or tourists take a trip to the top of the Spring’s attraction it may look a little different. Over the years, the Summit House has taken in 600,000 people annually and has been gradually worn down due to nature’s elements. Several agencies, along with the city of Colorado Springs, are working on putting a plan together to build a new Summit House. Currently the state is working with the Environmental Assessment (EA) to evaluate the impact the new Summit House will have on the economic, social, and cultural aspects of the community. After the EA finishes its work (estimated to finish around September 21st  this year), then the state will move on to “stage two” of the plan. Stage two is the design process; its end goal is to provide a building “that is functional, maintainable, energy efficient, educational, inspirational, and timeless…” according to Stuart Coppedge, Principal with RTA Architects. So next time you reach the top of Colorado’s peak, look forward to enjoying the new and improved Pikes Peak Summit House.
