On Thursday, Sept. 25 Liberty High School’s volleyball team competed against Rampart in their 2025 Homecoming game. However, the game held more importance than simply being a boost of spirit for Homecoming week as all money made from the event was donated to raise money for childhood cancer.
This school year, money has been raised from a variety of events to raise money for childhood cancer, including varsity soccer and football. During these events, the fans are encouraged to wear yellow, a symbol of the fight against childhood cancer. The raised money is partially being donated to the family of Courtney Lupo, as her son David Lupo is currently fighting a rare form of brain cancer. For such a difficult topic, a strong sense of community is crucial to support such a serious cause. As junior student council representative Caden Miller stated, “To me personally it means a lot to be able to raise money for such a good cause. I think it is really important to support David through his battle. The fact his mom works right here at Liberty is super powerful and it’s amazing we can support them with our tight-knit community.”
The most central part of this fundraiser are the fans, who were encouraged to wear yellow at the game. “I think with a lot of people in the stands it will not only set the tone for homecoming but will also show support for a great cause in an intense rivalry game”, said senior student council representative Landon Evans.
In order to bring people into the volleyball game, the student council sold cookies and brownies before the game. Miller elaborated that the goal of the event was to raise money and bring people closer together during an exciting week.
On top of the game being a “Fight for David” night, it was also a night of teacher appreciation. With so many things to fight for, the team was also getting ready to beat their rivals for their supporters in the stands. As Senior captain Morgan Stone said,” It means a lot to us that David gets to come out and be an honorary coach for us, and it also means a lot to support some of the teachers who do so much for us. Even though we’re supporting their causes, it means a lot that they are supporting our game.”
Stone elaborated that this game also meant a lot for her because she had just completed her achievement of breaking over 100 aces in her high school volleyball career. “It means a lot for people to care enough to come to our games, for whatever reason that may be. [The fans] definitely help with us having the successes we do.”
The volleyball team ultimately ended up losing to Rampart 3-0 with their next game being away against Doherty on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. As for David, he attended the Doherty vs. Liberty softball game on Thursday, Oct. 2 and joined the team as an honorary captain.
