Traffic, strict guidelines and denied entry are a few considerations that attendees of Liberty’s graduation at the Air Force Academy must make this year. The District 20 graduation ceremonies are held at Clune Arena, an indoor arena that hosts events like hockey, basketball and track and field, on the United States Air Force Academy campus. The United States Air Force Academy is a military base, meaning extra precautions and measures are taken to ensure nothing hazardous gets onto military grounds, which adds many more stopping points to ensure the event runs smoothly.
Because of the stops, traffic is often lengthy and backs up beyond the gate. Every vehicle is also susceptible to inspections beyond arrival, and guests will need a school ID or some form of visitor pass beyond standard identification. It’s also important to note that guests and family members with a criminal record or a history of altercations may be denied entry to the base, regardless of the student’s graduation.

District 20 released a statement on why the district makes this choice, further explaining why size and security are major factors: “Due to the size of Academy District 20 graduation ceremonies, USAFA will implement an Event Cordon in the interest of safety and security.”
The large arena provides ample seating and security, but the facility lacks parking for attendees. According to the District statement, they recommend driving in groups.
“Please consider carpooling with others as possible, as there is extremely limited parking due to construction at the Cadet Field House. The surrounding lots, including the overflow lot located on the east side of Parade Loop, have additional parking. There will be a shuttle service running between the overflow lot and Clune Arena. Be sure to take a look at the parking and traffic flow map.”
Entering and exiting the Clune Arena also has high levels of precautions and safety measures for both guests and graduates. “After the ceremony, graduates exit the stadium first, transition to the diploma pick-up area, and then exit the building. Guests will remain at their seats until released by the school to join their graduates outside.”
In addition, guests will be subject to bag checks at the door, as they have announced: “Early arrival is highly suggested. For safety and security, please note the size restriction and type of bag allowed inside the Field House. Be prepared to show keys, cell phones, or other metal-related items during the metal detection process.”
Graduation will take place on May 12, at 1:30 p.m.; all other students will not attend school on this day. Parents and outside guests must pre-register using the Base Access Registration Link.
