Theater Five’s senior class recently performed “Little Women”, a play based on the classic novel written by Louisa May Alcott. The performance was presented for students, teachers, friends and family members. The play is entirely student-led and focuses on the lives of the four March sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy as they grow up together and face different challenges during the Civil War era. The class production gave students the chance to show off the talents and skills they have been working on as year five theatre students while performing a well-known story.
Throughout the play, the audience learned about each sister’s personality and goals. Jo, one of the main characters, was independent and passionate about writing. Meg was responsible and cared deeply about her family. Beth was quiet, gentle, and kind to others, while Amy was creative and hoped for success in the future. The story showed how the sisters supported each other through difficult situations and important life changes.
The actors worked hard to bring the characters and their set to life on stage. They performed emotional and meaningful scenes that helped the audience understand the relationships between the sisters and their family. The hard-working cast members and stagehands worked independently with little help from the director to make it all happen.
Costumes and set design are important aspects of any performance, and ensuring they were from the right time period is important for a production as iconic as “Little Women”. The setting helps to progress the story and help audiences understand context for certain scenes. The students working on this project used props and furniture from past performances to create the setting necessary for the play. The set represented the March family home and other important locations in the story. Lighting and music were also used during the performance to create different moods and support scene transitions.
Many students also worked behind the scenes to help the production run successfully. Crew members handled lighting, sound effects, props, and set changes during the play. Cast and crew members worked consistently to create a performance that would run smoothly and entertain audience members. The performance gave students an opportunity to practice communication, responsibility and cooperation while working together on a large project.
Theatre Five’s performance of “Little Women” was a successful class production that allowed senior students to present a classic story in an organized and entertaining way. Through acting, stage design, and teamwork, the students created a performance that demonstrated their hard work and dedication to theatre that they spent all four years of their high school careers perfecting.
